Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Explained

Notifications about the behavior and analysis of devices used by your enterprise will keep you updated. Is this not a convenience we owe to our enterprise to ensure smooth functioning and productivity? Important meeting in a minute and printer out of ink shows unpreparedness, but with Simple Network Management Protocol in place, everything falls in line.

Mirat.ai is a modern automated module collection that can be customized as per your business needs. Live demo is available on the Mirat.ai website so surf the turf and know more to do more for your business.

Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Explained

How does an enterprise collect, organize information about its IP networks and managed devices? They do it by using Simple Network Management Protocol, the common internet standard protocol, and this tool changes behavior by changing information.

SNMP has been developed and deployed in three major versions; the SNMPv1 (earliest version), SNMPv2c, and SNMPv3 are more current versions that improve performance, flexibility, and security.

Fun Fact: SNMP initially was also used to control the targeted devices or systems.

But with rising security concerns, Simple Network Management Protocol has been deployed to monitor devices and not modify, reconfigure or change the behavior of the devices targeted.

Why Is SNMP Still Useful?

The first SNMPv1 Request for Comments (RFCs) appeared in 1988. But in the last years, much innovation has been done to scale up monitoring methods for devices, applications, and IT systems.

  • If you want to monitor applications, keep in mind that each program may have its own monitoring interface. Some of the most frequent techniques of monitoring applications are REST APIs, web services APIs, JMX, and so on. Applications rarely support SNMP.

  • SNMP support is quite limited in cloud and virtualization technologies.

  • Though load balancers and firewalls are advanced system devices that work well with SNMP, the data they collect is not shared or disclosed. But, other interfaces like SSH, API calls can be used to collect metrics from these advanced systems.

Why Should Your Enterprise Use SNMP?

If any of the below pointers have anything in common with your enterprise, Simple Network Management Protocol is your go-to protocol:

  • Learn how your network’s switches and routers are functioning.

  • Would you like to keep checking if the temperature in your server room is optimum?

  • Do you want to get notified if your system printer has enough paper or ink?

  • Do you want updates about the UPS and its power backup stats?

What Are The Three Primary Applications Of SNMP?

Simple Network Management Protocol is most commonly used for:

  • Network equipment auto-discovery — Vendor-specific MIBs are used to determine the kind of each device on the network. SNMP can also monitor network topologies and connectivity.

  • Tagging system equipment to collect data: SNMP can detect changes like workload inputs, performance statistics, and device updates. This is done by comparing data collected from time to time.

  • When irregularities are identified, network devices produce SNMP traps. A network interface failure may cause a router to trigger an SNMP trap, and by discovering such conditions, administrators are better informed.
